The default was DATA_PATH/<email>/general_chat_sessions, a dedicated directory so /chat
sessions formed their own Claude project group instead of cluttering the home. It is a sibling
of the home, and confineUserTree makes every sibling the platform's at 0700 because the others
are attachments and email_accounts. So it was unreachable for a member: the first live member
turn started there and every Bash call failed on its own working directory before doing
anything.
A per-member copy inside each home fixed the symptom and left two rules to remember. The owner
chose one rule instead — the account's own home, whoever they are — and accepted the trade
knowingly: /chat sessions now share a project group with anything else run from that home,
which was the reason the dedicated directory existed.
Removed rather than left dangling: getGeneralChatSessionsCwd, ensureGeneralChatSessionsCwd,
ensureMemberChatCwd, and general_chat_sessions from USER_DIRS so new accounts stop getting it.
Existing directories are untouched and their transcripts stay where they are — Claude groups by
cwd, so the owner's old /chat history remains under its own project slug rather than moving.
The UI labels move with it: the default group now reads "home" rather than naming a directory
that no longer has a role.
ChatIdentity keeps carrying both email and home. The pairing was justified in the comment by
general_chat_sessions being email-derived, which is now gone — but the distinction it encodes
is real (the email says who, the home says where), so the comment explains that instead.

The history layer, and the last change that could be made without a live member.
claude-sessions.ts had `claudeHome = process.env.HOME_DIR ?? join(DATA_PATH,
email, 'home')`, which discards its argument whenever HOME_DIR is set — always,
on a real install. Every transcript read therefore resolved to the OWNER'S
~/.claude no matter who asked, and the comment above it asserted "single-user
platform" as though that were a property rather than an assumption. A member
reaching these functions would have been handed the owner's conversation list.
Now every read takes a ChatIdentity {email, home} with the home resolved from
resolveHomeDir(userId), and this file has no way to invent one. Both fields
travel together because they are genuinely different: general_chat_sessions
lives under DATA_PATH/<email>, not under a home. Collapsing them would be the
same class of mistake as undefined meaning "the owner".
websocket.ts's resolveCwd takes a home, so `~` expands against the caller's own.
Identity is resolved BEFORE the cwd — expanding `~` before knowing whose home it
is would be exactly the bug being removed — which also let a duplicate
resolveTurnIdentity call from 6aeb304 be deleted.
chat.ts resolves per request and throws FORBIDDEN rather than falling back, same
posture as resolveTurnIdentity. agent-runner passes the owner's home explicitly
rather than inheriting it, since that path really is owner-only.
Made at 01:00 after saying it should not be. Three things I am least sure of are
listed in COMMS 29 rather than left for the reviewer to find: chat routes now
have a failure mode they did not have, resolveBaseCwd's exported parameter
changed meaning rather than shape, and the bare-email rewrite in chat.ts was
mechanical with hand repair.

The titles were looked up client-side against the sessions query already in cache, which only covers the
group being browsed — so anything running in another directory rendered as a truncated uuid, which is
most of them.
Resolved server-side now. The agent reports keys and nothing else, so liveSessionTitle finds the
transcript by scanning the project slugs, takes the cwd off its own first entry, and hands that to
claudeSessionContext — the same path the list uses, so the two agree on naming, /clear chains merged
included, rather than offering a second opinion.
A null title means no transcript has been written yet. That row says 'Starting…' and is deliberately not
a link: pointing at a session you cannot open yet is worse than plainly not being a link.

The harness delivers a finished background task to the agent by writing it as the user's next
message, so Claude's file holds a raw <task-notification> envelope as a user turn. Live it never
shows, because the same event travels separately as task:notification — it appeared only when a
refresh rebuilt the conversation from the file, as a bubble on the owner's side he never typed.
Same defect as INTERRUPTION_MARKERS and the same fix. Anchored to the start of the message so
quoting one inside a real message stays yours. Also skipped when picking a session's title, where
it is no more a title than a slash command is.
Verified against a live transcript: 38 user bubbles before, 32 after, the 6 removed being exactly
the notifications.

Compaction was the one thing the harness does that emitted nothing at all while it
ran, and it can run for minutes — silence that reads as a hung turn, which costs a
server restart to discover it wasn't. The sidecar now reports both ends: the start
from the PreCompact hook, the finish from the compact_boundary message with the
token count, both durable so a reload or a reconnect still sees them.
Tool rows open themselves while they run and hold for five seconds after their
result, so the inputs are on screen at the moment the call is made rather than
after the fact. The clock lives outside React, keyed by tool call id: rows are
virtualised, so unmounting is not the call ending, and a fast call can render its
start and its result together — a row that only opens when it catches the pending
state never opens for exactly the quickest calls. A click outranks the clock for
as long as the row lives. A failure behaves identically and differs only in colour,
so it stays findable by scanning and nameable in conversation.
Shell logs move off the green-on-black pre onto the shared code surface, which is
the one block that had no copy button and the one you most often want to hand to
someone else.

pressing stop ended the turn with "Claude Code returned an error" — the agent
sdk reports interrupt() as an ordinary failed result, indistinguishable from a
real fault downstream. the sidecar now flags the session it interrupted and
rewrites that event to the existing durable 'stopped', which opencode already
emitted. escape stops the turn (bound to the chat subtree, not the document),
and the prompt comes back to the composer verbatim unless you've started typing
something else. history parity: claude files [Request interrupted by user] as a
user message, so the transcript reader maps those exact strings to the same
role instead of replaying them as something you typed.

The list collapses each chain to its newest link — the only one that can be
resumed — carrying the root's title and start time, the summed message count
and a part badge. The detail splices the chain's transcripts oldest-first with
a divider between parts, server-side, so the client's index-window pagination
needed no change.
The divider says "context cleared — nothing above this is in memory", because
the whole risk of merging is that the history reads as continuous when the
agent's context is not. Delete cascades the chain and the confirm says how many.
Supersedes the "continues X" line from the previous commit: there is nowhere to
link to once the parent is scrolled up above you.

/clear starts a new claude session and the list showed it as an unrelated
conversation. claude records no parent link anywhere — not in compactMetadata,
logicalParentUuid, summary.leafUuid, the per-session slug, or the live process
registry — so infer it: a cleared transcript opens with /clear, and /clear
happens inside one process, so the parent is the conversation in the same group
that was writing to disk at the instant this one began (4ms apart, measured).
matching is on per-minute activity rather than updatedAt, because resuming a
parent moves its end time past its child's birth and lost the link entirely for
two of the three cleared sessions here. the window is symmetric because clearing
makes claude summarise the conversation it is ending, so the parent's final
record can land after the child's first. ambiguity fails closed — the wrong
parent also renames the conversation.
read-only: nothing is written back to claude's store, and an explicit title
always wins.
also: cleared sessions were titled "<command-name>/clear</command-name>" because
claude does not set isMeta on slash commands; and the chat header was hardcoded
to undefined, so it read "New chat" above every conversation you opened.

the chat group moves from ?cwd= to a path suffix behind a g/ discriminator
(/chat/g/home/me/project), and a session url carries no group at all.
the real fix is not the spelling. a session's working directory was read back
off the query string to decide where the agent executes, so the address bar was
the authority on where code runs. a pasted or refreshed /chat/<id> arrives with
no ?cwd= at all, so a turn sent before the resolve landed ran in the default
general_chat_sessions dir instead of the project; and a hand-edited ?cwd= could
name a group the session doesn't belong to, with nothing to reconcile them.
loadClaudeSessionById already resolves a session's cwd from the id alone, so the
id is the only source of truth there. it now travels on SelectedSession.cwd,
which is what the composer reads. the url can no longer contradict it.
the vocabulary lives in apps/ChatHistory/chat-routes.ts so a link built in a
panel and one built in a screen cannot drift.
also: startAgentRun no longer returns a literal chatUrl — it returns cwd and
AgentRunnerModal builds the link, so the server holds no copy of the frontend
url shape. and the post-turn permalink strips a stale ?cwd= instead of carrying
it forward onto the new session's url.

Background tasks already had a row in the transcript, but a row scrolls away — and a
task started ten minutes ago is precisely the one you want to keep an eye on. The same
`role: 'task'` rows now also drive a tray docked above the chat input: a chip per task,
running ones pulsing, finished ones dismissable.
Clicking a chip opens what the task is actually doing right now. Nothing about that
crosses the wire between `task:started` and the notification, so it is read from the
file Claude Code streams the task into:
$TMPDIR/claude-<uid>/<project-slug>/<session-uuid>/tasks/<task-id>.output
For a backgrounded shell that file IS the log; for an agent it is a symlink to the
subagent's own transcript, which is ordinary session JSONL and so parses with the
reader we already had. Both kinds are therefore reachable from one directory.
Resolution is by task id alone, deliberately: the client learns a task id from
`task:started` and nothing else — officer's per-connection session key is not Claude's
session uuid, and the uuid only arrives with the turn result, long after the tray needs
to show the task. A task that has not written anything yet answers 200 `{kind:'pending'}`
rather than 404, because that is the ordinary first second of a task's life.

Opening a chat from a non-default folder moved the cwd picker into a subdirectory of
that folder — three of the four sessions under ~/dockers/officer.dev jumped to
`platform`, the fourth to `Lyrics` — and everything after it was scoped to the wrong
directory. The list itself stayed correct, which is what made it confusing.
Two functions in claude-sessions.ts derived the cwd in opposite directions. parseSummary
(:103) keeps the first `cwd` it sees; parseClaudeTranscript (:182) overwrote it on every
entry, so it ended up with whatever a tool last cd'd into. A session's home is where it
was launched — that is how Claude Code files the transcript on disk and how the list
groups it — so the first one is right and the two now agree. It also stops a late entry
clobbering `fallbackCwd` when the caller already knew which group it was loading from.
Pre-existing, but only reachable since rows became real links (3682269): clicking one is
a route change now, so the deep-link resolver in ChatHistory/index.tsx:69 — previously
hit only on refresh or a pasted URL — runs on every click, and it feeds detail.cwd
straight into setActiveCwd.
Verified against the four real transcripts in that group: all four now resolve to
~/dockers/officer.dev. C4/C5/C6 pass in the browser (click, refresh, and fresh-tab
deep-link all land on the right folder).
Also adds docs/nav-test-checklist.md — the 56-check matrix for the navigation refactor
and the sidecar work, recovered from the transcript of the session that wrote it and
lost it (eff24773). The X block no longer needs its own branch now that sidecars is
merged. C is done, L/J/D/P/X/R are not.

to scan every project group for the transcript and return its real cwd. the session
list page resolves on load from that, setting the cwd picker and resuming. session

Officer is single-user: the server owner is the only account, created once by
/auth/bootstrap. Everything that existed to serve additional users was
unreachable, so it is gone rather than left looking like it does something.
Accounts: drop the invite / resend-invite / delete / list-users routes and the
Users settings screen, the inert /auth/signup handler, and the account
verification chain it fed (verify, resend-verification, VerifyScreen, the
UserInvite + VerifyAdmin + VerifyRegistration templates). /auth/verify-token
survives for password resets only, and now requires a reset-password token
rather than accepting any signed JWT.
Roles: drop the users.role column and the four-value USER_ROLES enum. The
permissions table granted every role identical methods, and every
role === 'Super Admin' check was permanently true. The JWT no longer carries a
role claim.
Sandbox: remove sidecar/sandbox.ts and its five call sites. bwrap was selected
only for non-Super-Admin users, so it never ran. It was also not a usable agent
jail as written — --share-net, the project root (with .env) bound read-only,
and runuser dropping to the server's own uid. Rebuilding it for agent
containment would be a different construction, and git history keeps this one.
getHomeDir keeps its DATA_PATH meaning; the new getOwnerHomeDir resolves the
owner's real login home, which is what terminals, chats and task runs use.

The default /chat working directory is used by both the Claude and OpenCode harnesses
now, so its Claude-specific name was misleading.
- Rename the dir + accessors: getClaudeSessionsCwd → getGeneralChatSessionsCwd,
ensureClaudeSessionsCwd → ensureGeneralChatSessionsCwd, path segment claude_sessions
→ general_chat_sessions (data-path on disk + code + UI labels/comments). No history
migration — the old Claude transcript slug is orphaned (intentionally).
- Remove the vestigial chat_sessions dir (leftover from the retired session store):
it only ever held empty claude/archived/ dirs, recreated by a signin hook. Drop that
hook (+ its dead imports) and the 4 unused data-path accessors (getUserSessionsDir,
getClaudeDir, getSessionDir, getArchivedSessionDir), and delete the dir.

/chat's session list, transcript load, delete, and rename now span both harnesses.
- opencode-sessions.ts — REST-backed reader (OpenCode's SQLite via its HTTP API, never
the DB): listOpenCodeSessions / loadOpenCodeSession / delete / rename, returning the
same shapes as the Claude reader, tagged harness:'opencode'. A serve is directory-
scoped, so listing a cwd = asking the serve rooted there. Transcript rebuild maps
user/assistant/tool parts and drops reasoning (parity with the delta filter).
- client.ts — adds listSessions/getMessages/deleteSession/renameSession over /session/*.
- chat.ts — /sessions merges both (newest first); /sessions/:id, DELETE, and
/title route by id shape (ses_ = OpenCode). ClaudeSessionSummary gains an optional
`harness` tag.
- send-opencode.ts — resuming from history: when the sessionKey is itself a ses_ id,
reuse that OpenCode session instead of creating a new one.
- SessionList.tsx — shows an "OpenCode" badge for OpenCode sessions.
Verified end-to-end against a live serve: list (5 sessions, tagged), load (transcript
rebuilt, reasoning filtered), and rename all work. Phases 1-3 complete; needs a restart.

The Sessions panel header gets a pwd selector: the default claude_sessions dir,
plus every directory that already has Claude sessions (auto-discovered by reading
the real cwd back from ~/.claude/projects), plus free-text entry. Switching pwd
refetches the list for that cwd's Claude project group and runs New Chat / resume
in it. Backend: GET /chat/pwds + a ?cwd= param on the session ops; the WS handler
honors a chosen cwd for /chat (default claude_sessions). Browse-modal picker next.

Single-user platform: the Super Admin's Claude process now uses the real home
(HOME_DIR) instead of DATA_PATH/<email>/home, so its transcript store IS the same
~/.claude the terminal `claude` uses — platform and terminal sessions are
interchangeable (native `/resume` sees them). The session reader resolves the
same home. The generated container CLAUDE.md is no longer written for the Super
Admin (it would pollute the personal global ~/.claude/CLAUDE.md and is stale);
MCP tools still load via --mcp-config, and email/project panels inject their own
prompts. Sandboxed users keep their isolated home.

Rename appends a {"type":"summary",...} entry to the session's JSONL transcript
(Claude's own format, so the title lives in .claude); the reader takes the last
summary as the title, without a timestamp so it doesn't reorder the list.
PATCH /chat/sessions/:id/title backs it. The list gets inline rename (pencil ->
edit in place) and a two-step delete confirm so a stray click can't nuke a
transcript. Rename verified against a synthetic store.
