Speech-to-text is now plugins/transcribe — sidecar, its own config, its own
skill and a task for the file browser's context menu. The transcription logic
moved BYTE FOR BYTE: 416 lines whose every decision has a reason attached, from
the two-pass detect-then-transcribe to the 25 language priming prompts to
timeout:false. Verified identical rather than assumed.
Removed here: api/stt/, server-settings/stt.ts and its mount, POST /chat/stt,
POST /file-browser/transcribe, the FileViewer handler behind the button hidden
last release, the Settings screen, the dead useAudioRecording hook and the
orphaned locale keys across all six locales.
blobToWav stayed. It lived in the same file as the dead hook and is still used
by DictateDialog — unrelated to STT, and deleting by file rather than by use is
how that would have gone.
No permission entry to remove: STT never had one, living under server-admin,
chat and files. The registry count is unchanged and docs:check is green.
The plugin ships a task that will not appear in the menu yet — the platform
loads a plugin's skills, affordances and notifications from its own directory
but not its tasks. That loader is the remaining piece of docs/plugin-capabilities.md
and is deliberately not built here.
1426 pass, tsgo clean, 18 plugins discovered with none broken.

Maintenance had "rebuild the frontend" and "restart the server" — one compiles what is on disk, the
other reloads it, and neither CHANGES what is on disk. Doing that meant ssh, on every server, every
time.
Refuses a dirty tree and a non-fast-forward, the same two refusals as pullPlugin and for the same
reason: this checkout is somebody's working copy on at least one machine, and a button that discards
uncommitted work is worse than no button. Fetches `origin HEAD` rather than a branch name, because a
checkout made before the default branch was renamed is on one the remote no longer has — the trap
plugins/update.ts already hit, and it bites hardest on the installs most in need of updating.
It deliberately does not chain into anything. A pull touching bun.lock means an install, which the
frozen-lockfile rule exists to keep deliberate; one touching a schema means db:push against a live
database. So it REPORTS what the update implies — install, db:push, restart or rebuild — from the file
list, and leaves the decision with whoever pressed it. The commits pulled are shown, because "it
worked" is less useful than knowing what arrived.

PORT, PUBLIC_URL and POSTGRES_URL are names half the software in the world
uses. Bun auto-loads .env into EVERY process started in the platform directory,
so a bare PORT reaches the sidecars, the tools they spawn and anything an agent
runs from here — and a bare POSTGRES_URL reaches things with no business
holding a database credential.
Four parts.
officer-setup now writes OFFICERDEV_-prefixed names, with the reasoning in the
generated file so whoever opens it later knows why.
Every consumer reads `OFFICERDEV_X ?? X` — eleven sites across the databases,
the DAV router, officer-url.mjs, os-user-postgres and two scripts. The bare
name is the FALLBACK, never the source, which is what makes this safe to ship
before every machine has been converted.
`bun run fix:env` converts a file in place. Idempotent, preserves comments and
`export`, leaves the value untouched including an `=` inside it, and refuses to
touch names belonging to other software — prefixing PATH or NODE_ENV does not
rename a variable, it deletes it.
And it runs on every restart from the server settings screen. There rather than
at boot because a restart is the one moment the file can be rewritten and take
effect in the same breath: the process about to start is the one that reads it.
Non-fatal, since the fallback means the worst case is that nothing changed.
gen-index reads either spelling out of the file directly, because it is run by
hand as often as by the setup and a bare shell has no .env loaded.
Verified by converting this machine's own .env: PORT, PUBLIC_URL and the
database all still resolve, gen:index still finds its URL, 1152 pass.

Settings → System → Maintenance. Two buttons that are deliberately not a pair.
── Rebuild: real, and free ──
The same `rebuildFrontend` a plugin install already runs. `Bun.build` reads source
from disk on every call and writes `build/`, and the server serves that directory by
reading each file per request — so a rebuild lands on the next page load with no
process restart, no dropped websocket and no chat session lost.
── Restart: the only way to load server code, and it costs ──
Bun caches modules for the life of the process. Measured rather than assumed: editing
a file and re-importing returns the ORIGINAL export, and a cache-busting query picks
up that one specifier while everything it imports stays cached. So `rebuildHonoApp`
— which install already does — re-wires the same module instances into a new tree and
cannot see a backend edit. Busting the whole graph would duplicate singletons: two
database clients, two session maps, one process.
There is therefore no third button, and the screen says why. A "remount the API"
control would look like it reloaded the backend and would not.
The restart answers BEFORE it schedules itself, because the process serving that
request is the one being replaced. It refuses outright when PM2 does not know this
process — in development the platform runs under `bun --watch`, where the restart
would fail into a promise nobody awaits while the button reported success.
Verified: `POST /rebuild-frontend` → 200, 3.0s, 3 outputs; anonymous → 401. The
restart button is deliberately untested from here — pressing it would end the session
this was written in, which is the same reason it needs a label that says so.
tsgo clean, frontend builds, 914 pass / 7 fail unchanged.

docs/sidecar-audit-2026-07.md called this
one dead months ago
deliberately KEPT, because "no caller" turned out not to mean "dead":
POST activity/announce not orphaned — it is the missing PRODUCER for the
detached[] list GET activity/tasks already returns
and ActivityScreen already renders. an unbuilt
feature, not dead code, and finishing or dropping
it is a product decision.
GET agents/runs three days old. part of agent grounds, still being
built. "not yet consumed" is not "dead".
PUT/GET vault/unlock-key six days old, storage half of a feature whose
client half is unwritten. the vault is off limits.
DELETE integrations/google/connection caller exists but is deliberately
commented out of the tree. dormant on purpose.
vnc-manager's getSession is now orphaned too, but it is sidecar-internal and
was not in scope; noted rather than chased.

Onboarding was dead in three layers:
- The OnboardingAdmin screen was only reachable from a route block in App.tsx
that has been commented out, so it never rendered. Its ServerTypeCard carried
accountMode ('organization' | 'single'), inherited from the codebase this was
based on and meaningless for a single-user platform.
- Two /onboarding-complete endpoints, one public and one protected, that no
frontend code called. Both read a server_config key that was never written, so
both answered false while the app's own path defaulted to true.
- HomeScreen gated on settings.onboarding.complete to show a welcome panel, and
seedHomeDir created an Onboarding folder from DATA_PATH/Onboarding and
/Onboarding_Admin — neither seed directory exists, so it only ever produced an
empty folder.
Also drops the onboarding key from UserSettings and the now-empty home-header
panel from the default home layout.
