pastilhas 2e8ec845c8 step 1/4: the permission engine is called permissions, not capabilities
The word meant four different things in this repo, not the three the offscale
doc records:

  1. the permission registry → RENAMED here
  2. $OFFICER_ROOT/capabilities/ items → kept; this is what capabilities are
  3. sidecar routing keys → step 3, becoming `handles`
  4. Lightning wallet features → kept; a domain term, and on the wire
                                            to the mobile apps

The fourth was not in the doc and a global find-and-replace would have broken
the mobile wallet, which reads `{ kind, capabilities: Capability[] }` from the
wallet sidecar. So this renamed against an explicit file allowlist rather than
by sweeping the tree, and `CapabilityPage.tsx` — the UI for the item store, and
correctly named already — was left alone.

Moved: servers/capabilities/ → servers/permissions/, capability-gate.ts →
permission-gate.ts, users/capabilities-routes.ts → permissions-routes.ts,
hooks/useCapabilities.ts → usePermissions.ts. Identifiers follow.

Three breaks the typechecker could not see, all found by exercising it live.

The route paths moved with the prose sweep, so the server served
/user/permissions while the frontend still called /user/capabilities. A 404 on
every page load, and tsgo clean throughout.

The response FIELD moved too. `client.get<SelfPermissions>()` is an unchecked
cast, so `data.capabilities` became `undefined` at runtime with no compile
error — `can()` would have answered "no" to everything and the dock would have
emptied itself.

And the grants list was passed straight out of the database, so it arrived as
`{ role, capability, level }` while the screen read `grant.permission`. Every
role would have rendered as holding nothing. It is now mapped in the route:
the wire says `permission`, the column still says `capability`, and step 2
therefore changes nothing any client can see.

The stale react-query keys were the quiet one: two files still invalidated
['self-capabilities'] after the hook moved to ['self-permissions'], so
installing a plugin would have silently stopped refreshing the dock.

The database is untouched — `role_capabilities` and its `capability` column are
step 2, and the two call sites that cross that boundary say so in a comment.
Round-tripped the 9 live grants through the admin endpoint to prove the PUT
contract survived: 9 before, 9 after, Member's three intact.

Also reverted prettier churn on five landing-page files that a broad --write
picked up. Second time today; the lesson is not sticking.

tsgo clean. 797 tests, 787 pass, same 7 pre-existing failures — two of which
now read "path → permission" rather than "path → capability".

pastilhasandClaude Opus 5 b6feca8350 owner can reset a member's platform password
The gap at the other end of create-user.ts: the owner could set a password once, at
creation, and never again. Losing it meant a hand-written UPDATE with an argon2
hash — the same "edit Postgres by hand" hole that creating accounts used to have.

POST /api/users/:id/password, owner-gated, with a button on the row.

GENERATED, not typed. The failure this exists for is "I created the account and
forgot to copy the password down", and an owner typing a replacement can lose it the
same way on the second go. Shown once in a dialog built to be copied — a dialog and
not a toast, because a toast that times out while somebody finds a pen loses the one
thing they came for.

The generator satisfies validatePassword BY CONSTRUCTION rather than by luck: one
character drawn from each of the four required classes, the rest from the union,
then Fisher-Yates shuffled so the first four positions are not always
lower/upper/digit/special. Rejection sampling throughout — `% n` on a byte biases
the early characters. Then it runs validatePassword on its own output, so if the
rules ever gain a requirement the alphabets do not cover it throws at the one call
site instead of minting passwords the login form rejects. Measured: 20,000
generations, all four classes present every time.

l, I, 1, O and 0 are absent from the alphabets. This gets read off a screen and
typed somewhere else.

Signs them out everywhere, as asked: passwordChangedAt = now, and userMiddleware
already refuses any token whose iat predates it. That overwrites the null
create-user leaves to mean "the owner chose this, not them" — checked, nothing reads
that column except the token check.

The Linux account is deliberately untouched, and the dialog says so. Members have no
Linux password and never had one: ensureOsUser runs useradd with no -p, so it is
created locked. Their terminal goes through setpriv, which does not authenticate;
their SSH is the key the owner pasted; `su - <member>` as root does not ask. And
machine-setup sets PasswordAuthentication no — verified on this host — so one could
not be used to log in even if it existed. Setting one would be a new way in, not a
repair.

The owner is excluded: they have change-password, which asks for the current one,
and resetting themselves here would end the session doing it.

Verified: transpiles, all lucide icons exist, 20k generator runs. tsgo next.

pastilhasandClaude Opus 5 f063fc0c08 remove origin validation
ALLOW_ANY_ORIGIN, ALLOW_ANY_ORIGIN_MUSIC, and everything they gated. The flag
defaulted to ON, so none of it ran on a real install — what comes out is
documented defence in depth that was already switched off. The file said so
itself: "Both flags and their call sites come out once the tailnet is the
perimeter."

Origin was never authentication here in any case. An app's `officer://<hex>`
origin is chosen by the client, forgeable outside a browser, and extractable from
a shipped binary.

Gone: the two flags, isOriginAllowed, isOriginCheckDisabled, isMusicOriginExempt,
originValidationMiddleware, ORIGIN_RULES and the whole OFFICER_<APP>_ORIGIN
scheme, PUBLIC_URL's origin/host derivation, and origin-validation.test.ts, which
existed only to pin them. CORS now echoes whatever Origin it is given, which is
what every install already did.

What SURVIVES is the reason this needed care. origin-validation.ts held two
unrelated things, and the second was the global authorization gate — a valid
non-owner token reaches only what its role grants, deliberately NOT under the
flag because it is account-based rather than origin-based. Its own comment called
it "the airtight half". Deleting the file wholesale would have deleted
authorization.

So it moves to _middlewares/capability-gate.ts as capabilityGateMiddleware, with
the name matching what it does: nothing in it reads an Origin header any more.
hono.ts mounts it in the same position, ahead of every router.

origin-middleware.ts stays and is untouched — it extracts the Origin for six auth
handlers that log it, and for passkeys. Extraction, not validation.

Also updates every claim that rested on the old model: CLAUDE.md's security
section and repo map, docs/secret-store.md, docs/mobile-api-keys.md, and five
messages in machine-setup's Tailscale section which told the owner to set
ALLOW_ANY_ORIGIN=false when declining a tailnet. That advice is now impossible to
follow, and the honest version is different: with no tailnet the token is the
whole lock, so put a proxy in front and restrict who can reach it.

Not typechecked (empty node_modules, frozen installs). Every changed file parses;
the setup section was run and writes four variables now.

pastilhasandClaude Opus 5 2c9d4e55aa retry a linux account in place instead of deleting the person
POST /users/:id/provision-linux, and a terminal button on each user row. One
operation covering three needs that were all previously answered by "delete the
account and make it again":

backfill an account created before the feature existed, or while the host was not
            set up for it
retry the first attempt failed for something since fixed — the traversable
ancestor chmod being the one everybody hits once
re-key replace authorized_keys with a new public key

Deleting to redo a retryable side effect throws away the password, the dashboards and
everything else keyed to the row.

The provisioning block moves out of create-user into provisionOsAccount, shared by
both entry points for the same reason app-store/members.ts is shaped that way: two
moments, one piece of work.

Found by testing the retry rather than the create: provisionUserDirs re-chmods every
directory including home, and home belongs to the MEMBER after the first successful
run — chmod requires ownership, so it threw EPERM and took every retry down before it
started. Those chmods are now a default for directories being created, not an
assertion about ones that already exist; os-user.ts sets the home's mode through sudo
and is the authority for it.

The route answers 200 with the error in the body, because the interesting cases are
partial: "the account exists and is confined but the keys failed" is not nothing
having happened, and the row shows both halves.

Verified end to end: blocked ancestor reports the chmod and leaves osUser null, the
retry after that chmod succeeds and records the row, and a re-key replaces
authorized_keys without rotating the outbound key.

pastilhasandClaude Opus 5 69a31051ac the owner can create accounts
POST /api/users plus an Add-account form in Settings > User management. Until now
createUser had one call site — bootstrap, gated on an empty user table — so every
non-owner account anywhere had been inserted into Postgres by hand.

Created accounts are Active. The column defaults to Unverified and signin refuses
anything else with a bare UNAUTHORIZED, which is exactly what made the hand-INSERT
route look like a wrong password.

Also closes a hole found while reading the write path: a second Super Admin was
storable. The CHECK constraint pins user 1's role but cannot see other rows, and
getOwnerUser() was LIMIT 1 with no ORDER BY, so two holders would have made "who owns
this server" a question the query plan answered — and that answer feeds the agent
sidecar's identity, vault access and origin scoping. Both write paths now refuse the
role and getOwnerUser() orders by id.

USER_DIRS and provisionUserDirs move into data-path.ts so the create handler and
scripts/provision-user-dirs.ts cannot disagree about what an account's skeleton is.

pastilhasandClaude Opus 5 d56be0301d retire the single-user claim from the docs it outlived
CLAUDE.md asserted "single-user is a hard invariant, not a stage" while
users held six rows and role_capabilities held grants. Every doc that
repeated it is corrected here, in prose and in the code comments that
carried the same claim.

The accurate statement is narrower: one owner who bypasses every check,
other accounts holding only what their role is granted, and a set of
capabilities — terminal, chat, files, tasks, items, desktop, browser — that
are structurally ungrantable because they execute as the owner's OS user.

TODO.md gains a Multi-user section for what the read turned up: no way to
create a second account, dashboards.id colliding across users, authorize.ts
untested, pty/vault/opencode taking no identity, Radicale still owner_only.

claude-sidecar-isolation.md's open question is answered rather than left
open — the per-email spawn model is dead weight, because chat is an
execution capability and no second account can ever reach it.

pastilhasandClaude Opus 5 dbd471c32d capabilities: the api, and one honest exception
GET /api/user/capabilities is what the caller may reach, and every account
may ask — it is mounted on a core capability so an account granted almost
nothing can still find out what it has. the dock and route guards read it.
it is a courtesy, never enforcement: hiding an icon is not access control
and the 403 in origin-validation stays the lock.

GET/PUT /api/users/capabilities edit the policy, owner-gated. the write path
is where the registry's authority over capability keys is applied, which is
why the column has no CHECK: unknown keys and non-app kinds are refused
rather than stored for the resolver to drop on read.

the exception is `selfService`. useAuth calls PUT /api/users to change your
own name and avatar, and that route has always lived on the same router as
the owner-only account administration around it — so declaring /users an
admin capability locked every member out of their own profile. moving it to
/api/user would be tidier and would break every shipped mobile client, so
instead the registry says out loud that this one route is not what the
capability around it is. exact method and exact path, so it cannot widen:
verified that PUT /api/users passes while GET /api/users, PATCH
/api/users/:id/role, DELETE /api/users/:id and PUT /api/users/:id are all
still refused.

23 unit tests.

pastilhasandClaude Opus 5 a328451250 add /settings/user-management
The role column now has somewhere to be used from. Lists every account, changes
roles, removes members.

API — all owner-only, mounted on the existing users router:
GET /api/users list, plus the role enum so the UI never
                               hand-writes the names
  PATCH /api/users/:id/role change a role
  DELETE /api/users/:id remove an account

ownerGate uses isSuperAdmin, which now reads the role column. The global backstop
in originScopeMiddleware already confines a non-owner token to /api/auth +
/api/music, so a Member cannot reach any of this — the gate is the explicit
statement of intent and gives a clear 403 rather than leaning on a rule written
for another purpose.

The password hash never leaves the handler: listing accounts is not a reason to
hand out hashes, so the response is an explicit shape rather than the row.

The owner is refused twice over, in both handlers, before the database has to.
ck_users_owner_is_super_admin and deleteUser() would each reject it anyway, but a
raw CHECK violation surfaces as a 500 in Postgres wording, which tells the person
clicking a dropdown nothing. Same reason `isOwner` is on the wire: the UI locks
that row rather than offering an action that cannot succeed.

The menu entry is shown to the owner only. That is tidiness, not access control —
the route stays reachable and the endpoints are gated server-side, because a
hidden menu item is not a permission and anything relying on it being hidden is
already wrong. Said so in the code, next to both.

Deleting cascades — passkeys, dashboards, screens, email accounts, playlists —
and there is no undo, so it asks first and says what goes.

Not built: invitations. Creating an account still means bootstrap or a row by
hand; an invite flow needs a token, an email and an acceptance screen, which is
its own piece of work.

Untested at runtime: the routes 404 on the running server because platform TS
does not hot-reload. Everything typechecks, the token path was verified against
/api/dashboards, /api/tasks and /api/jobs returning 200, and the 404 is the
restart asymmetry rather than the wiring. Needs `pm2 restart officer`.

brunorezioandClaude Opus 5 044aacf4d5 remove the dead multi-user surface
Officer is single-user: the server owner is the only account, created once by
/auth/bootstrap. Everything that existed to serve additional users was
unreachable, so it is gone rather than left looking like it does something.

Accounts: drop the invite / resend-invite / delete / list-users routes and the
Users settings screen, the inert /auth/signup handler, and the account
verification chain it fed (verify, resend-verification, VerifyScreen, the
UserInvite + VerifyAdmin + VerifyRegistration templates). /auth/verify-token
survives for password resets only, and now requires a reset-password token
rather than accepting any signed JWT.

Roles: drop the users.role column and the four-value USER_ROLES enum. The
permissions table granted every role identical methods, and every
role === 'Super Admin' check was permanently true. The JWT no longer carries a
role claim.

Sandbox: remove sidecar/sandbox.ts and its five call sites. bwrap was selected
only for non-Super-Admin users, so it never ran. It was also not a usable agent
jail as written — --share-net, the project root (with .env) bound read-only,
and runuser dropping to the server's own uid. Rebuilding it for agent
containment would be a different construction, and git history keeps this one.

getHomeDir keeps its DATA_PATH meaning; the new getOwnerHomeDir resolves the
owner's real login home, which is what terminals, chats and task runs use.
